The League
The NFL
The governing league of American professional football is called the NFL, or the National Football League. This league makes the rules and the regulations that govern the game of professional football. The league consists of 32 current teams. These 32 teams are then split into two conferences, the NFC (National Football Conference) and the AFC (American Football Conference). Each of these two conferences are then split into 4 divisions each, known as the NFC North, East, South, West and the AFC North, East, South, West.

Current Commissioner of the NFL: Roger Goodell
Former Commissioners of the NFL:

The NFLPA
NFL players are represented by a labor union named the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA). The NFLPA was founded in 1956 and was formally recognized a few years later due to the collective bargaining agreement. It ceased to be a union in 1989, but in 1993 it was reformed and negotiated another collective bargaining agreement, which will govern the NFL through the 2011 season. The NFLPA is led by a executive committee, which is composed of current players and NFLPA Director and President.

Current Director of the NFLPA: Gene Upshaw
Current President of the NFLPA: Troy Vincent
Current Player Members of the NFLPA Executive Committee: Mark Bruener, Kevin Carter, Ernie Conwell, Donovin Darius, Brian Dawkins, Robert Griffith, Kevin Mawae, Keenan McCardell, Tony Richardson, and Jeff Saturday

The Bears played all their home games at Wrigley Field from 1922 until 1970, and ever since 1971 they have played in Soldier Field, with the exception of 2002. In the 2002 season the Bears played in Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Illinois on the campus of University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, while Soldier Field was being renovated
. The franchise was originally named the Decatur Staleys as it was established by the A.E. Staley Company of Decatur, Illinois. George Halas and Edward Sternaman were given full control of the team in 1921, and the team relocated to Chicago. The team was then renamed the Chicago Staleys and Halas purchased the rights to the team from Staley for $100. In 1922, the team was renamed the Chicago Bears, which was derived from the Chicago Cubs, and moved to Wrigley Field. As coach of the Bears, Halas is credited with the development of the T-formation. After Halas passed away in 1983, his daughter Virginia McCaskey took over ownership of the team and her husband, Ed McCaskey, succeeded Halas as Chairman of the Board. The 1985 Bears team, led by Mike Ditka, are credited with the development of the 46 defense.

Brief History: Founded in 1929 as the Portsmouth Spartans. The team joined the NFL in 1930 as the Spartans. In 1932 the Spartans played the Bears in an unscheduled NFL Championship game because they had the same regular season records. As a result, the interest in a Championship game led to the NFL splitting into Eastern and Western Conferences, which included regular championship games starting with the 1933 season. Due to financial struggle during the Great Depression and poor revenue, the team was sold to a group led by Detroit radio executive George Richards in 1934. The team was then moved to Detroit and renamed the Lions, which was influenced by the Detroit Tigers. In 1964, William Clay Ford, Sr. purchased a controlling interest in the team for $4.5 million. Since that purchase the Lions have only won one playoff game. Singer Marvin Gaye tried out for the team in 1970, but was cut early. Following their 2-14 season in 1979, the Lions picked Billy Sims with the first pick of the 1980 NFL Draft. Following a 4-12 season in 1988, the Lions picked Barry Sanders with the third pick of the 1989 NFL Draft. Sanders would make the Lions a team to watch throughout the 1990’s, but abruptly retired after the 1998 season. After the 2000 season the Lions hired current general manager Matt Millen, who had no previous business or football operations experience. Since his hiring many have called for his firing, due to his many draft failures, which include Joey Harrington, Carlos Rogers, and Mike Williams.

The Officials (AKA "The Zebras")
The Referee (Head Referee) ("R")
The referee is responsible for the overall supervision of the football game and has the final authority on all rulings. He is sometimes referred to as the head referee or crew chief. He can be differentiated from other officials on the field from his white cap or the “R" on the back of his uniform.

On every play the head referee will position himself behind the offense, on the right side (if the quarterback is a right-handed passer) and on the left side (if the quarterback is a left-handed passer). It is also his responsibility to count the number of players on offense. The head referee focuses on the quarterback, he usually determines a possible roughing the passer and determines, in the event the quarterback loses the ball, if the play results in a fumble or an incomplete pass. The head referee also focuses on the quarterback during the hand-off to the running back and remains focused on him until the running back clearly has the ball, in case of play-action or other trick plays. After the running back clearly has the ball, the head referee focuses on the running back and the contact behind the running back. During special teams plays, the head referee focuses on the kicker or punter and any contact made to them, in order to determine any roughing the kicker penalty.

During instant replays, the head referee confers with a replay official in the booth and watches a High-Definition replay on a monitor positioned on the sideline. When making penalty calls and announcing final decisions the head referee uses a wireless microphone system which are projected through the stadium mega speakers. The head referee also has the responsibility of the pregame and overtime coin toss.

The Umpire ("U")
The Head Linesman ("H" or "HL")
The Line Judge ("L" or "LJ")
The Field Judge ("F" or "FJ")
The Side Judge ("S" or "SJ")
The Back Judge ("B" or "BJ")

Miscellaneous

Jersey Numbers
The system of standardized numbering of numbers was instituted in the 1973 season. This standardization of the jersey numbering system was put in place to assist the officials in identifying players easier. The numbers and their respective positions are as follows:

1-10: Quarterbacks, Place kickers, and Punters
10-19:
Wide Recievers, Quarterbacks, Place kickers, and Punters
20-40: Running backs and Defensive backs
40-49: Tight Ends (if all the 80-89 numbers are taken),
Running backs and Defensive backs
50-59: Linebackers and Offensive Linemen
60-79: Offensive Linemen and Defensive Linemen
80-89: Wide Receivers and Tight Ends
90-99: Linebackers and Defensive Linemen

If a player wants to have a jersey number that does not conform to this system, they must file a petition to be granted an exception. In 2006, Reggie Bush of the New Orleans Saints petitioned to wear the number 5 which was his number both at USC and in high school, his petition was declined by the league.
