Ads on Uniforms

I was watching a TV report last night, where a Advertising Promoter, was talking about putting blatent advertising on NFL Uniforms. He wasn't just talking a small patch on the shoulder, he was pushing for something like in Nascar. I missed a few "Blurbs" of what he was saying, but I just don't like the idea. We already have few "Little" patches that are not too distracting, but covering the Helmet or Jersey with sponsers is just plain NUTS......

Agreed, it won't happen anytime soon. The NFL doesn't need it. It makes so much $$$ already. When they start broacasting games online one day it will make even more.

will never happen with collegiate sports. i could see maybe minor advertising in professional sports, like maybe a single corporate sponsor for a team with their name on the uniforms. nothing like some of the things you see in europe though, where the uniforms are completely littered with advertising.

it's too tacky.

It does seem to "fit" in Nascar, people got used to it, and now it's part of the uniform. But for other sports like Football, or hockey, I don't think that fans would appreciate.

I don't think it will happen anytime soon, although for the right price I'm sure some would be all for it. It's slowly coming though, look at all the stadiums that have been renamed with sponsors.

As much as I don't think, and don't want it too happen........I can see it happening.

The NFL is all about advertising money. That is how they survive, through TV right money and advertising money. So I think it's sooner then we think with the ads on Uni's.

I'm with you, PatriotGuy. I remember when the Nike swoosh began showing up, people were pretty uptight about it, but now it's commonplace in so many professional sports.

It's not coming, it's here! The Nike logo is just the beginning. It may not say buy Nike, but you know what it means. That's the kind of advertising most companies want.

I don't think it will ever become like Nascar, but I also know never to say never!

It will happen, its just a matter of time. You can only turn down free money for so long and any smart company will eventually take it. It will probably start small but will increase over the years.

This is a pretty common thing in european soccer so there is precedent.

I'm waiting for the day someone legally changes their name to a product for a fee because then I will know the apocalypse is upon us. I can see it now "And starting at running back Gatorade Jones!"

I don't mind seeing them in NASCAR but I don't want to see ads on football uniform. I can't see this happening in football though.

Yeah, but teams in European soccer NEED those advertisement funds. The NFL is arguably filthy rich as it is with their TV revenue (which is shared), merchandise, and ticket sales (is there a team that has a small amount of fans??). The NFL also doesn't have to deal with things like transfer fees as soccer teams do.

I don't think it's going to happen in the NFL. The owners will likely fight tooth and nail to avoid having the their team be associated with a company on their jersey instead of their logo.

That may be true but how long can you turn away free money which is what advertising on jerseys is. Eventually a time will come when greed or just plain economics overcomes tradition. I don't like it but I know its coming.

Although some old school owners may fight this tooth and nail I think newer owners or owners with an eye on the bottom line will welcome the new revenue stream. Also the NFLPA may play a part in getting this implemented as any revenue from advertising on jerseys would likely cause the salary cap to increase thus resulting in more money for the players.

The NHL really needs to do it, to make up some revenue...if I was an owner I'd already be trying to do it, it's be an easy way to make some mega bucks to sign players.
