Lance Briggs caved and will play this year under a one year deal.
What a shame that he was too weak to stand his ground.

Is one year for 7.2 million really caving? They promised not to franchise him after this year and he is getting a whole lot of money to play one season. IMO he came out ok, instead of sitting out, not making any money, and looking like a selfish bastard to all prospective teams he is playing football, making a bunch of money, and probably just improved his image a bit.

Cave
My hatred for the bears aside they have mistreated him and he made himself look like a fool he said he would never play another snap for Chicago because the way they treated him and now here he is signing with them. He was making it a principle issue and he caved and did nothing but to paint a picture of himself for the league as one that will cave eventually. They were playing chicken and he blinked first.
But then again athletes are like cheap whores (pardon my french) anything for a buck. I won't get into athletes and money and how petty they can be (looking in Brady Quinns direction)

Reapster, you said it all when you said "My hatred for the bears"...
Now, as a bears fan, I'll say this. Briggs tried to play hardball and he lost. I don't think they mistreated him at all...teams have a right to franchise any player they choose. Briggs had one solid season and then he expected the world. The bears tried to trade him, and aside from the redskins, not much interest was generated. Once Briggs realized the bears were prepared to move on without him, he changed his tune. |

I really don't see why the plays complain so much about the Franchise tag. Sure, I understand that they could get more money without it, but it isn't like the tag is a new and unexpected invention. I don't think there is a single player in the league who played before it was in play.
Those are the rules of the game. Why would you get upset about a team using one of the rights granted to it under the CBA? Is being one of the top-3 paid players at your position REALLY that insufferable? If the tag was such a deal breaker, then they had their chance to get rid of it with the negoatiations from lt year. Before anybody attacks the strength of the players union, remember that the head (Upshaw) is voted into that spot. If the players didn't think he was competent, they could have replaced him. They didn't. Bears have done nothing wrong here nor have they mistreated Briggs in any way. It has been Briggs doing all the grandstanding antics and whining to the press, the Bears have played this by the book: they tried to sign Briggs to an extension, the offer wasn't acceptable to Briggs, so the Bears used their right to tag him to protect their asset. They even floated trade offers (rumored) and got a lukewarm reception. If Briggs was so opposed to the tag system, he could always go play in the CFL. Really, Briggs should be thankful. Truth be told, every linebacker looks awesome when they line up next to Urlacher. Briggs is following the same path that Colvin and Holdman did before him. Had he left, he would find that life isn't so easy when the best LB in football isn't standing next to you. Briggs is a good player, but he is not a great player.

finally briggs did something smart. if your not happy with getting 7.2 mil a year then you shouldn't even play football. IMO these guys get paid WAY too much. if your just playing for the money than you shouldn't play at all cause your ruining the game.

And that is what makes it so sad...we all know what a glory hound Rosenhaus is, and i often wonder if the atheletes out there today really have a clue. You really think that DR really gives a fu*k about any of his clients.... All he cares about is getting them to sign the biggest contract that he can. And i understand that is his job, but sometimes you have to wonder who the decision maker is. |
