Your Top 5 ALL TIME Cornebacks?

New to the board., Die hard steeler fan for about 20 years. I had this discussion with some NFL fans at the sportsbar last weekend. Who are your top 5 corners ever? Mine would be

1. Rod Woodson
2 Deion Sanders
3 Mike Haynes
4 Aeneas Williams
5 Lester Hayes

Honorable Mention

Mel Blount
Willie Brown
Darrell Green
Eric Allen
Champ Bailey

Are those top 5 in your life time or top 5 history of football?

They're all fairly recent players and either HOF or future HOF.
What about Jimmy Johnson, Night Train Lane, Herb Adderly from the golden era 50s and 60s. Or is the list from post merger?

In my lifetime. I have heard a lot about Night Trane Lane ,but i never got a chance to watch him play. I started watching football in 1980 on a regular basis.

CoLtsFootBall is an unknown quantity at this point
I've only been die hard since the mid 90's so I'm unfamiliar with alot of the old timers but like with every sport It's impossible to compare the past with the present. Those old time players in every single sport wouldnt make a highschool team today. Alright I know thats very arguable but I'm just making a point that you have to take that into account as well. That said my 5 are.

1. Sanders
2. Woodson
3. Bailey
4. A. Williams
5. MCalister

Redskins fan here this my list of the best 5 CBs of all time.

1. Darrell Green- He was the best shutdown CB of his generation he was Deion without the hype. He's the best I ever saw.
2. Deion Sanders- He is the second best CB I ever saw his only weakness he didn't tackle.
3. Jimmy Johnson- I never saw him but I read he was one of the first shutdown CBs when he played for the 49ers in the 60's.
4.Champ Bailey- He has had a great career he is still a shutdown when he's healthy.
5. Lester Hayes- Great CB for the Raiders in the 70's and 80's. He was so good he really didn't need the stick'em he used.
I have 2 who just missed the top 5
6. Mel Blount- Hall of famer and played on what could be argued the best defensive team from the mid 70's to 1980.
7. Michael Haynes-Underrated he was just as good as Lester Hayes on those Raiders teams.

1. Deion Sanders - He was good for every team he played for, and was dominant in coverage.
2. Rod Woodson - I have no explanation for this. I've seen highlights, he looks good when he plays, and makes an impact.
3. Night Train Lane - After watching so many features on him on the NFL Network, he is definately a top 5, and I'm pushing top 3 here. Shut down corner that could make tackles, he's awsome.
4. Lester Hayes - Just down right good at the basics of his position.
5. A toss up between Champ Bailey in his prime and Mel Blount

Some of you should have your fan cards revoked for making such embarassing lists. Aeneas Williams, Lester Hayes, Mike Haynes all have no business in top 5 discussions. Deion wasn't the best either because he was a horrible tackler. Some of you need to seriously freshen up on your history

1. Night Train Lane
2. Mel Blount
3. Primetime
4. Jimmy Johnson
5. Rod Woodson

round out the top 10 ...

6. Herb Adderley
7. Darrell Green
8. Mike Haynes
9. Emlen Tunnell
10. Willie Brown

Best of the rest ...

Roger Wehrli
Lem Barney
Champ Bailey
Aeneas Williams
Mel Renfro
Eric Allen
Lester Hayes
Louis Wright
Emmitt Thomas

How can so many people say Darrell Green is not a top 5 CB. He was considered to be the top CB for most of the 80's and he was a very dangerous return man.He was aso better because he tackled people who could forget him runningdown Tony Dorsett when it looked like he was going to score. He was still a Pro Bowler in his late 30's so he has to be a top 2 or 3 CB in my opnion.I never saw Jimmy Johnson Or Tunnell that is why I don't have them higher or not ranked.

Running a sub 4.4 in your 40’s is nothing short of spectacular and there is definitely a case to be made for Green … fastest ever …. Ultimate cover corner … consummate pro. The reason I have him at #7 though, is because his career is best supported by the longevity of it. He falls into the category of great guy/class act but gets slightly overrated because of these qualities. Don’t get me wrong, I love Green and thought he had a great team first mentality (which probably hurt his stats in the long run), but his numbers reflected over the course of his career were not dominant.
