9ERS Draft Analysis
Nothing spectacular about any of the picks but they all fit a need. Day 1 was a surprise at 1st because it didn't seem like DE and G were positions that were priorities but if those two are able to fill in at multiple spots it makes sense. Balmer, Rachal and Smith should all be able to contribute as rookies.
Balmer gives depth at 3-4 DE and 4-3 DT. What I wonder is if this pick means they intend to use Justin Smith as a 3-4 LB or do they plan to bulk him up for the 3-4 DT. After signing Smith and Sopoaga I didn't think they'd be targeting DE so soon in the draft especially when Groves and Merling were still on the board. I thought they over drafted Rachal from USC but if he can play RT and backup the guard spots it fills a huge need and adds to the competition on the OL which is sorely needed. Also after this pick Groves was still on the board. 9ers got a good value with CB Reggie Smith a 3 yr starter from OU in rd 3. He's another guy that can play 2 positions. Sounds like they'll try him at CB 1st and if that doesn't work then move him to safety. Either way he raises the competitive level at those positions. Cody Wallace was a guy I liked when watching A&M last season he's a great player and was the anchor for the A&M OL the last 2 yrs. Va Tech WR Josh Morgan is a good prospect because of his speed and athleticism. He is coming from a team that never opened up their passing game to show his true talent. I don't understand the OSU OLB Larry Grant pick. He's undersized and isn't a pass rusher, perhaps they'll use him to cover the TE. He can tackle but I'm not sure he'll get off blocks well in the NFL. Overall it was a decent draft, a solid B. They addressed needs and got a couple of good values in there. Undrafted FA WR Maurice Purify from NU would be an excellent pickup.

I'm telling you, Josh Morgan could be the steal of the draft if he gets his head out of the clouds. Like you said, he didn't get a chance to show off his talents at Va Tech, and that was partly his fault. He's 6'1'', 215 pounds and is very athletic. If he stops acting like an idiot, he could be a great WR.
