Stupidest decision in the history of football, 9ers kick a FG with under 2 minutes to put the score at 9-13 WTF, grow some balls and go for the much needed TD, what do you have to lose, fire Nolan now.
Well I guess it could of worked out, the Duke dropped a TD pass, 9ers kick the FG, then go for an onside kick, Rams recover and go 3 & out, Dilfer drives the length of the field and throws an interception from 21 yards out. Still a dumb call, You got all your timeouts but one 1st down and thats ballgame. 5 years of misery is getting to me. And why go for the onside you give them good field position and yourself horrible field position when they punt. Go for the TD or just kick the ball off, could of had much better field position and more time to win the game instead of launching a long pass that Dilfer can't complete. Also going for it on 4th down is much better then attempting an onside kick.

Smith to rest hurt shoulder, but surgery a possibility
By Len Pasquarelli ESPN.com San Francisco 49ers starting quarterback Alex Smith, who has struggled with shoulder and forearm problems since suffering a Grade III separation of his right shoulder on Sept. 30, will likely need at least two more weeks of rest and rehabilitation, and even then might still require surgery to repair the damage. The first overall choice in the 2005 draft, Smith was examined on Tuesday by noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala. Sources close to Smith said Andrews apprised the third-year veteran that the shoulder separation was not significantly improved and might actually be worse in some ways than when he initially viewed the original MRI of the injury three weeks ago. A 49ers spokesman said the team's medical staff had not received the Andrews report. Smith will return to the Bay Area and undergo more rehabilitation. He will be reevaluated in about two weeks and, if there is no improvement, surgery might be indicated. Given the results of Andrews' examination, there apparently is some possibility now that Smith will not play again in 2007. Until Tuesday, Smith had not visited with Andrews in person since the injuries. Andrews had, however, studied the MRI results and other tests conducted in San Francisco and had essentially served as a consultant to the 49ers' medical staff. Smith, 23, complained last week that his throwing arm was "killing" him, and revealed that, in addition to the shoulder separation, he had developed tendinitis in his forearm. He had a cortisone injection for his forearm soreness at mid-week but that did not markedly improve the condition. Agent Tom Condon of CAA suggested that the tendinitis, which kept Smith from being able to grip the ball properly and almost certainly contributed to his recent inaccuracy, may have resulted from an overly aggressive rehabilitation regimen on the part of the 49ers. There was definitely some tension last week between Smith and head coach Mike Nolan. The quarterback broadly hinted that Nolan was perhaps not as supportive of him as he could have been. Nolan indicated that he may not have understood the seriousness of the injury and said that Smith wanted to play. Both sides eventually agreed that, at the least, there was a lack of communication. In his seven starts this season, Smith has completed 94 of 193 passes for 914 yards, with only two touchdown passes and four interceptions, for a passer rating of 57.2. Perhaps in part because of the shoulder and forearm injuries, the former Utah star has appeared to regress in some areas over his performance of a year ago. Smith started the first four games of the season before sustaining the shoulder separation, then missed two games before returning to the lineup for three contests. With his arm clearly aching -- some opponents and teammates said Smith grimaced nearly every time he threw the ball -- he sat out last Sunday's game and veteran Trent Dilfer started. Dilfer will remain the starter for Sunday's upcoming game at Arizona, and likely for the foreseeable future. It's hard to judge how good this guy really is Former coach Tollner will help Niners' struggling offense By John Clayton ESPN.com Hoping to rescue an offense that is averaging a league-low 11.3 points per game, San Francisco 49ers coach Mike Nolan brought in longtime coach Ted Tollner as an assistant on Tuesday. Tollner, who was working as a broadcaster for the University of San Diego near where he lives, flew to San Francisco Tuesday morning, met with Nolan and immediately started helping out with the game plan for Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. Bringing him in was a natural. He has worked with former 49ers offensive coordinator Norv Turner, who left after last season to take the head coaching job with the Chargers. "Ted has great experience with over 30 years in the NFL and in college coaching, and is well respected in the football community," Nolan said. "He will be a tremendous asset to the 49ers organization. We will continue to make every effort to improve our team." In 2002, Tollner was the 49ers quarterbacks coach, and after two seasons he was promoted to offensive coordinator, working for Steve Mariucci. He followed Mariucci to Detroit. Tollner learned the West Coast offense with Mariucci, but he is known more for his knowledge of the Don Coryell system that Turner brought to the 49ers after Turner was fired by the Raiders. At 67, Tollner wasn't sure if he still wanted to coach, but he was willing to help out Nolan for the final part of this season. Turner's replacement, Jim Hostler, has been under a lot of criticism since taking over. The offense has scored the fewest points and has the fewest yards in the league. Quarterback Alex Smith has regressed this season after showing so much promise in 2006 working with Turner. Following Sunday's 13-9 loss to the Cardinals, Nolan said Hostler would stay as offensive coordinator for the remainder of the season. Now, he's staying but with the help of an experienced hand. "Jim is an easy scapegoat for people to jump on," Nolan said. "The production is not as good as it was last year. I wouldn't put all that on Jim. He's an intelligent guy busting his tail. It's an offensive staff's responsibility to get it done." The 49ers also signed quarterback Drew Olson to the practice squad, waiving guard Sean Estrada to make room. Olson, the former UCLA star and a Bay Area native, spent last season with Baltimore before briefly catching on with Carolina this month. Need all the help they can get

Report: Niners likely to hire GM to oversee all football operations
ESPN.com news services With the San Francisco 49ers riding an eight-game losing streak and coming off four straight losing seasons, co-owner Denise DeBartolo York is promising change. DeBartolo York gave coach Mike Nolan and quarterback Alex Smith a vote of confidence, but she told the San Francisco Chronicle that the team plans big changes during the offseason, including likely hiring a general manager to oversee the entire football operation. "I would consider anything," DeBartolo York told the Chronicle. "I think that we have to get the minds together, the powers that be. I don't think I can start to delve into the entire football operation right now. I would need the whole panel of people there." DeBartolo York told the Chronicle that the panel would include her husband and co-owner, John York; son Jed York; vice president of player personnel Scot McCloughan; vice president of football operations Lal Heneghan; and Nolan. DeBartolo York told the Chronicle that the head coach would no longer be the final authority on draft or player personnel decisions. The Yorks know pretty much nothing about football

9ers do something right for once and sweep the Cardinals, putting the 8 game losing streak to an end.

I don't know but i think Dilfer has the right attitude for the 9ers team i mean he is trying to take this team on his shoulders and get the team moving while he isn't mobile at all and does make some bad decisions he has proven better than Alex Smith so far, which it pains me to say. In all honesty i think we need to let Smith heal his shoulder and keep Dilfer as the starter for the rest of the season at least we might get some kind of rythem going as Dilfer can throw a pass down field and it would also help keep Smith shoulder from reinjuring it for nothing this season.

It was the Gore, Willis, add V. Davis show. I agree faith, Dilfer sucks but let him play it out and give Smith one more chance next season.

9ers points scored 164 thats last in the league, points scored against the 9ers 285 thats 24th in the league which is mostly due to the 3 and out production from the offense. What does this all mean, FIRE JIM HOSTETLER !!! Injuries are part of the game no excuses.

This game is getting ugly, another 3 and out. Dilfer passing 3 for 12 with 20 yards and a INT for a TD. He might be the worst QB ever, how did this guy win a SB. This is getting old, they need to give Hill a try if it's gonna be a route.
