Minnesota Vikings Minnesota Vikings Draft Analysis

I'll try and get one up for all the teams. Starting here because they justed drafted John David Booty, and I thought that was kind of interesting. Pick analysis are from NFL.com

1st Rounder - n/a. Traded to Kansas City in the Allen trade

2nd Rounder - Tyrell Johnson, FS, Arkansas.
Quote:
Pick Analysis: The Vikings move up five spots in order to grab Johnson -- a guy who was apparently moving up everyone's draft boards due to the speed he displayed in his workouts. Known as a physical presence at the line of scrimmage, Johnson's speed convinced teams he could be a more complete safety. There's a chance he could even play cornerback at the next level.
3rd Round - n/a. Traded 2 3rd rounders as part of the Allen deal.

4th Round - n/a

5th Round - John David Booty, QB, USC.

Quote:
Pick Analysis:Booty was a two-year starter with 20 starts at USC. He's not in the class of the other USC QBs before him but a really accurate passer who knows where to go with the footballl. He's a solid picik for the west coast offense - a guy who throws a lot of shallow crossing routes. He's the kind of guy who for 2-3 years you won't have to play him and he'll learn on the scout team.
5th Round - Letroy Guion, DT, Florida State

Quote:
Pick Analysis:
After starting just 14 games during his three years with the Seminoles, it was a great surprise to FSU coaches when Guion announced after the Motor City Bowl that he would bypass his senior season and declare for the 2008 NFL Draft. He was part of the school's academic cheating scandal that saw 36 football players ruled ineligible for postseason action. With just 66 tackles to his credit over 32 games, his resume does not give professional teams much to base their evaluation on.
6th Round: John Sullivan, C, Notre Dame

Quote:
Pick Analysis:Sullivan has short arms, which is not ideal for a center, and he may lack some toughness, but he has smarts and is adept at knowing the offense. He was the leader of a Notre Dame offensive line that struggled mightily and he needs to show more tenacity.
7th Round: Jaymer Johnson, WR, Jackson State

Quote:
Pick Analysis:There is nothing especially remarkable about Johnson's measurables and he lacks great size, but the Vikings are looking for receivers that may be able to fill a void and he is a long term developmental project.

Overall, I was unimpressed. I thought trading up for Booty was unneccesary.

More so, I thought trading up for Johnson... when Brohm was still on the board... was baffling.

Vikes added nobody that will contribute in anything more than a back-up role this year. If that, as Boulware is the primary back-up at safety and Frerotte is the #2 QB.

What disappoints me is that we are going with the O-Line and QB we have now. Booty is a 5th rounder for a reason, he is as much project as prospect so isn't one we can bank on to upgrade on Jackson. Brohm was the best WCO QB in the draft. When I heard we traded up, I prayed it was for him. No dice.

As for the line, there is no competition with Cook for the right side of the line.

Despite a great running game and defense, our shortcomings on the line and at QB will hobble us.

Now, I am all about the BPA... but we didn't wait and take the BPA. We parted with additional picks to get the guys we were targeting. If you are targeting a specific player rather than best player on your boards, that player should address some sort of need.

I guess I am just amazed at how cavalier Childress and the team is about the QB position. They are dead-set to prove how smart they are by keeping Jackson as the undisputed starter. I hope they are right, but the ration part of me wonders what the heck they are thinking.

I tend to agree here JCD, I thought trading up for Booty in the 5th was a desperate attempt, since they passed on Brohm and Henne in the 2nd, he projects best as a career backup.

Although Tyrell Johnson was a great selection, he's going to be a playmaker no doubt.
