Cowboys Acquire Roy Williams

Cowboys acquire Roy Williams from Lions

Quote:
Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - The Lions and Cowboys struck a deal just before the trade deadline on Tuesday that resulted in wide receiver Roy Williams being shipped to Dallas.
In exchange for Williams' services and its seventh round draft choice in 2009, Detroit will receive Dallas' first, third and sixth picks in next year's draft.
Williams, a fifth-year receiver out of Texas, has recorded 262 catches for 3,884 yards with 29 touchdowns in 60 career games.
The 26-year-old has struggled with the inconsistency of Detroit's quarterbacks this season, grabbing 17 balls for 232 yards and a touchdown.

Glad to have another receiver, but damn, thats a big overpayment.

You have look at it this way, kinda like what Jerry is looking at it. That 3rd rounder we are giving them, we already had a few other 3rd rounders (so we don't lose too much b/c we still got a 3rd rounder). That 6th rounder, we didn't have before today anyways (we were planning on not having that) and we got that 6th rounder back as well as a 5th rounder from Tennessee thanks to Pacman getting suspended. So ok in essence we only gave up a 1st rounder for a proven solid WR who will open up our offense even more. Just think about it Roy Williams essentially for only a 1st rounder. Even if you decide to draft a WR with a 1st rounder in the draft it's a coin flip to see if they are even a solid WR, let alone Roy Williams caliber. I say a great trade! And omg I can already picture it now: Roy Williams opposite T.O. with Crayton in the slot, Witten as your TE and the Barbarian in the backfield (makes me drool just thinking about it).

Sounds like rationalization to me.

Yes, you had extra picks.

You can't disregard them as "found money" because you parted with assets to acquire them. You gave up picks / moved down is last years draft to gain them, either the picks you acquired or the picks you gave up are indeed part of the equation.

For example, I hear people saying that the 6th doesn't matter because you are getting a 5th from the Titans. Thing is, you already gave the Titans a 4th to get that 5th (and a few games of PackMan). You are not getting that pick back.

Many articles had a great point, you enter the day with 10 draft picks and you leave it with 9 picks and Roy Williams....... Honestly I'm satisfied with the deal. You gave up a 6th (probably late 6th round) for a 7th (probably an early 7th), the 1st you gave up might as well be a second because we're counting on it being late in the 1st. And the 3rd well we gave up our original 3rd rounder but hey we still have Cleveland's 3rd rounder from the trade we did last season where we gave up our '08 4th rounder for what could be an early '09 3rd rounder (so we still came out on top there). So in essence you traded a coin flip of a WR (that late 1st rounder which would have been a WR), a 3 rounder that you already had a replacement for, and moved down a few spots from your late 6th rounder to an early 7th rounder to pick up a Pro-Bowl receiver who has great measurables, got arms like a gorilla, is big, strong, and has great hands that can pluck the ball out of the air above just about any CB in the league. Oh and btw you already have a future-HOF WR on the other side of him not to mention the best TE in the league in Jason Witten, one of the best slot WR in the league in Crayton (yes he is amazing in the slot, he's a horrible #2 but great #3) and then you throw in Barber in the mix coming out of the back field turning little dump offs to 70 yard TDs or just running over your opponent. I think I'm pretty much happy with the trade.

That is poor logic.

A simple count ignores the relative value of picks. 2 1st rounds are worth more than 50 7th rounders, but that logic would indicate that 50 > 2.

Wit hya here.

Um... what? A late first is equal to a second? This is always said by teams trying to rationalize trades.

That is typically the logic that leads to teams, like the Cowboys, to victimize desperate teams. Like the Falcons giving up their 1st for a 2nd a few years back. 99.9% of the time, the team with the higher pick ends up winning.

An analogy, $29 is pretty close to $40 (an example of the 1st and 2nd round pick). If I write you a check for $29, will you send me a check for $40?

Great hands? Are we talking about the same guy here?

You will stop drooling when T.O starts talking about getting the ball more. And he asks to be trade at the end of the year.
