1. Trading up into the top 10, or likely the top 5, to draft McFadden will be costly for the Cowboys in the picks that they will have to give up. To do so the Cowboys will have to give up: (According to Trade Value Charts)
For Pick #1: Pick 22, Pick 28, Pick 60, Pick 92, Pick 124, and likely next years 1st, still this trade would likely be shorting Miami in value. Not including the next year's 1st the Cowboys are short 1080 points with the above picks. In order to trade up here they would likely have to give up some one like Marion Barber. For Pick #2: Pick 22, Pick 28, Pick 60, Pick 92, Pick 124, and likely still the next years 1st and the Boys would still be 480 points short. To make up such a difference they could give up next years 2nd instead of 1st and maybe still pull of this trade. For Pick #3: Pick 22, Pick 28, Pick 60, Pick 92, Pick 124, and likely instead of next years 1st or 2nd you would be looking at maybe next year's 3rd or 4th to make up the 80 point difference in the trade. For Pick #4: Pick 22, Pick 28, Pick 60, Pick 156, and Pick 161. This trade isn't too bad, but still pricey. For Pick #5: Pick 22, Pick 28, and Pick 60 for both Pick 5 and Pick 133. For Pick #6: Pick 22, Pick 28, Pick 92, and Pick 156 this is the closest to an even trade you can get. If McFadden were to slide past the Raiders this is likely where he would stop. For Pick #7: Pick 22, Pick 28, Pick 156, and Pick 161 in this trade with the Patriots. For Pick #8: Pick 22 and Pick 28 for both Pick 8 and Pick 136. For Pick #9: Pick 22 and Pick 28 for both Pick 9 and Pick 105. For Pick #10: Pick 22, Pick 60 and likely next year's 3rd or 4th rounder for Pick 10. If McFadden were to drop this far, this would be a deal Jerry would jump out of his seat for. This would be an amazing deal, because while Jerry is giving up a 1st and a 2nd rounder and a pick next year for this he still has another 1st and the rest of his draft is still mostly intact in addition to picking up a playmaker. 2. Money, money, money. Moving anywhere in the top ten would cost the Cowboys a boatload of cash to sign McFadden. JaMarcus Russell (#1 pick) last year got 6 years, $61 million (with $32 million guaranteed) to Amobi Okoye with 6 years, $15.4 million (with $12.785 million guaranteed) in 2007. In 2006 Mario Williams (#1 pick) got 6 years, $54 million (with $26.5 million guaranteed). If you scale this #1 pick this year should get around a 6 year, around $68-70 million contract (with around $38-40 million guaranteed) and if you use Adrian Peterson's rookie contract as a benchmark you're looking at a contract worth at least: 6 years, $40.5 million contract (with $17 million guaranteed); scaled you're looking at around a 6 year, $47-48 million (with around $23-25 million in guarantees) if he is picked in the top 10. Last I checked the Cowboys are around $22 million under the cap, if not less, so even if you can draft this guy you are cutting it very close on your cap. If you had to sign this guy you would likely have to rework the contracts of Tony Romo, and maybe Flo, and Davis; however you need to factor in the fact that you will have to resign Newman after next season. 3. Darren McFlaws. McFadden doesn't have all too many flaws, but the guy has a few glaring ones. Although I agree the guy is flashy, fast, and elusive when he gets hit his legs go completely dead. He has no 'umph' when it comes to finishing contact. When McFadden gets hit he's going down, reminiscent of Julius Jones hitting the pile. I admit his upside is much better than his downside, but ego may be an issue if it comes to having to share carries with Barber. His off the field issues are glaring with his frequent bar fights and paternity suits. McFadden is a great player, but you have to weigh his flaws against his flash before you decide whether or not to draft him. 4. Alternative choices. There are alternative choices at running back that would fit in the Cowboys system. One very widely considered running back that would fit right into our system is Felix Jones, a speedy running back that would fit right into our 2 back system and contribute to our return game. The great thing about going for Jones over McFadden is that we wouldn't have to trade up to get Jones and would still have a second 1st rounder to pick with. And when you sign Jones you would only be looking at around a 4-5 year, $10-15 million contract with around a $6-9 million signing bonus. So you would be saving a whole lot of cap space by drafting Felix Jones instead of McFadden. I say let us forget about drafting McFadden and instead draft us DeSean Jackson and Felix Jones, both speed demons who both would contribute to our return game and bring flash and pop to our already potent offense.

Finally a reasonable post from a Cowboys fan! Let the teams that are struggling deal with the cap issue.
I can't agree more with his glaring flaws. His legs are very small and not proportional to his upper body. When met with contact, McFadden doesn't have that drive of an Adrian Peterson type runner. And second, you nailed it on his ego. He has off-field issues and I can see him being another high paid headache for the Cowboys. There are plenty of other running backs in the draft that are much underrated. Mendenhall? Stewart? (Assuming he is normal after his rehab)

Excellent post. If Jones listened to fans like yourself, maybe the Cowboys could do something in the post season besides lose. You have hit the nail on the head. Going after McFadden would cost them way too much.

I haven't met one cowboy fan (except for the occasional snot nosed kid) who is in favor of trading up to snag McFakin. Everything you said is completely true. If JJ wants to mortgage their future for his fellow Razorback, then he's an even bigger fool than I thought he was.
