Cowboys sign Tank Johnson for 2 years

Woohoo we got us a thug. We found a replacement for an injured Jason Ferguson. Signing Tank Johnson may be a great move. Low risk, high reward. I sincerely believe that Tank has turned he life around, he's been out of the news for a long time, and he has served his time.

ESPN - Tank Johnson reaches 2-year deal with Cowboys - NFL

Not a particularly special player who could be a headache off of it.

The guy is making only $255,000 for the half of the season he is playing and only $605,000 the second full season. That is like unsigned rookie free agent kind of money. What risk is there when you could easily cut this guy and not take a huge salary cap hit if he acts up?
Low risk - Small salary cap hit if you cut the guy.
High Reward - Could be a great replacement for the injured Ferguson. Huge guy in the middle.

imo, with a guy like tank the risk doesnt exclusivly mean only the salary.

If he screws up off the field all Jerry has to do is cut him loose. Jerry doesn't have to hold onto him and loses very little from cutting him, so what is such the big risk? He's most certainly not gonna bring his guns on the field so why do we need to worry about that? And plus a guy in Texas with 20 guns is not called a criminal he's called a Texan.

simply associating w/ the team is enough, and having an unstable guy like that in the locker room around stable players..minus TO...is enough for the cause of concern. hey, if you dont mind, great, good on ya for it, but i know if he was playing for the eagles id be majorly concerned..but id be just like you too insofar as attempting to convince everyone its no big deal, if he plays great awesome, if he dosent, the goodbye.

but from an outsiders perspective, i dont know if itll be that cut and dry. in fact, i doubt it very much.

To the best of my knowledge Tank never had attitude problems....he had gun problems. Now if he shoots someone in the locker room that's a problem...but I doubt his sttitude will be a factor in anything.

This is true, the guy has never been a bad locker room presence. He has just had some gun issues which in Texas will be the norm. He will fit in fine, and his work ethic and attitude is not bad at all.

I like the move because we don't pay him much and if he even thinks about getting out of line Jerry will cut his ass, but I am not sure how he fits in a 3-4. I really don't expect to hear much about him once the suspinsion lifts. I think he will see limitted time, and end up a FA that we could care less about.

This signing doesn't move me one way or the other.

Aikman on PTI right now isn't a fan of the move for the same reason as I, I want character guys on my teams and Tank isn't one of them. Sure release him if he causes problems, but once the problems are caused will it be too late? On top of this, I'm not entirely convinced he's all that great or will realistically do much to stabilize the defense.

I just don't know how anyone thinks Tank will help this D? He plays in a 3-4 next to Tommy Harris... how is he going to play in a 3-4 next to Marcus Spears? It's 2 completely different defenses with 2 completely different stregnths. I don't see him even getting on the field with a star on his helmet.

can it hurt to give him a chance. pass rushing has been non existent this year for us. we give every team all day to throw then we wonder why guys like jacque reeves get litup. we need ellis we need tank we need d ware to play like he did last year. you have to take chances as an organization every good 1 does, and quite honestly this aint even a big risk. we can easily teach him our defense it aint hard to learn b 4 he played in chicago he had to learn their defense to. have faith my fellow cowboy fans , this is our year.

There's a ton of criticism to be levied at the way this team has been run the last few seasons. Read any of my posts on any board when it comes to things like this, I've been incredibly consistent across sports in my contention that character is just as crucial as talent on a team.

I hope Phillips does a good job with the defense this year, they were woefully misused under Parcells who drafted a ton of pass rushers....and then hardly ever blitzed, but I'd rather it not be with an idiot like Tank on the team.
