The Giants. Let's see. A major disappointment at QB. Manning III is not very good. No Tiki, so the ground attack now rests with a 265 pound starter. Why do I not see a lot of breakaway speed there? WR Toomer is getting old, Burress is playing well, and Moss is an unknown. Shockey has to get over a pile of injuries. The WR's are in relatively good shape. The left side of the offensive line is questionable. The D line was the Giants strength, but will Strahan come back, and if he does, will he really want to play? LB's are anyone's guess. The secondary depends on oldster Madison and Webster, who was berated last year. The coaching is questionable at best. Why is Coughlin even there this year? Overall, the Giants will battle with the 'Skins for 3rd place in the NFC East.

I agree man, I really think the Giants are in trouble and could wind up being an absolute mess. Having a lack of talent is one thing, but things in New York are just compounded by keeping Couglin around and having a couple of other headcases in the room.

2006 Season Recap
The New York Giants went into last season with high hopes. They had a young quarterback they thought would break out, a great set of wide receivers, a fantastic running back and a solid defense. Things looked good in the first half of the season as the Giants stormed out of the gates with an excellent 6-2 start. However, things would unravel from there and the Giants would only win 2 games the rest of the season to finish 8-8. Most troubling was the continued struggles of Eli Manning. The Giants are still waiting for him to break out and once again they'll have to wait another year at least. The task won't get any easier with the receiving core a year older and with no Tiki Barber to hand the ball off to in 2007.

The first five games of the giants schedule looks like a result of 1-5

said it before and i'll say it again, the giants will have a top 5 pick in the 2008 draft. that being said if eli manning doesn't show any sign of taking a step forward i'm gonna purchase his giants jersey and put R. Leaf on the back

Eli has been inconsistent but to compare him to Leaf is a bit foolish. Eli's problems can be corrected and hopefully for his sake allow him to be a solid pro. Leaf was a whacko head case who didn't do a single, solitary thing in the league other than become the punch line for a joke.

5 Questions

1. Will the real Eli Manning please stand up. Can Eli finally show consistency at the NFL level? He's been great at times and awful at others. Will he ever take the next step?

2. Is Jacobs the real deal? He's built like a tank and showed it last season on short yardage situations, but can Jacobs be versatile enough to handle a more diverse role in the Giants backfield?

3. Will anyone listen? With team leader Tiki Barber off in the sunset, even more of the focus in the room will be on Coughlin. Will the team that collapses in the 2nd half bother tuning into their lame duck Coach?

4. Is Strahan going to be in the fold? Rumours are going around that the heart of the defense may retire before the season. Can the Giants withstand the loss of their emotional leaders on both sides of the ball?

5. Can the Wideouts rebound? There's talent there to be sure. But with Shockey and Toomer coming off injuries, the Giants may have to rely quite heavily on the talented (however aggravating) Plaxico Burress. Given their importance to the overall offence because of the loss of Barber, the receiving core falling back would be disastrous

Breakout Player: RB Brandon Jacobs

After the retirement of Tiki Barber, Brandon Jacobs will be given an opportunity to show he can be the man in the Giants backfield. A huge body with tons of power, Jacobs will have to show he's versatile enough to handle starting duties at the running back position. If he falters, Ruben Droughns will be given an even bigger role on the team.

On the Hot Seat: Eli Manning

Eli has been inconsistent thus far in his NFL career. He's shown flashes of brilliance and then flashes of awful play. This is a huge year for his career and it got even bigger with Barber gone. Eli needed to take the next step regardless and now will have to do so without a very dependable safety blanket in Tiki Barber behind him in the backfield.

yeah i get a bit wound up when i talk about him. i just always thought he brought absolutely nothing to the table.
which is also why when it come to the giants and the falcons, the chargers look soo smart for the draft day moves they made between the two.

Eli is gonna have some fun this season running away from pass rushers. With Petitgout gone, his blind side protection may have some issues, and without Tiki the pass rush and coverage will make it difficult for him. I don't expect a huge year outta Eli and I see him flopping this season making the Chargers getting Rivers instead of Manning a great decision.

The possible departure of Micheal Strahan will be a huge blow for the Giants even if they sign Simeon Rice. If Strahan leaves I don't see Coughlin having a job after this season.

I hope nobody else gets injured in tonight's pre-season game against the Jets.

For what it's worth, I don't see Coughlin getting an extension unless this team wins 9 or more games.

Anyway, here's my idea of strengths and weaknesses so far this pre-season.

Strengths: General offense. Eli's had a great camp, the receivers are doing well enough, I actually saw Shockey catch balls, and Jacobs & Droughns could be a duo who can pound the ground (I like this pairing). Yeah, it'll need some time to gel and they need serious work on their finishing in the red zone; but this unit won't cause Giants fans many reasons to groan and worry. At least not as much as the offensive line, penalties, and...

Weaknesses: DEFENSE. Well, not the defensive line thanks to the continued development of Osi Umeniyora and Justin Tuck, but Kiwanuka at linebacker complete with whoever else is there (Pierce and...uh...Torbor? Blackburn?) is filled with question marks. More importantly, thanks to an injury to Sam Madison, the secondary remains more useless than useful. If you can run around, have wideouts and tight ends burn you on routes, and not be able to catch a ball, you too can be on the Giant secondary at this rate.
