I am not so hard on Eli... nobody knows how to get less from his players than Coughlin.
So let's analyze his stats... '05 3700+ yards 24 TDs and 17 interceptions... not bad for a 2nd year guy by any standards... unless your last name is Manning. and know every talks about how aweful he was last year and are ready to call him a bust... '06 3200+ yards and 24 TDs 18 Ints... not that much of a drop off, especially looking at how much more than ran the ball than in 2005. I'd take Eli over a lot of other guys in the league, I say everyone should stop trying to cram him in his Brother's shoes and treat him like any other young QB on a marginal team. |

They won the division in '05 and made the playoffs last year. If his last name was anything other than Manning no one would be talking shiat about him.

For sure, and to be fair in the year they won the division, Dallas was a mess and the Eagles were decimated with injuries

Gotta disagree with ya Goosey (that's right, Goosey.)
Eli Manning just doesn't have that "it" that his bro does. I don't even see him being a SB QB. |

Actually you just agreed with me, my point is that he is graded against his brother... which isn't fair. His brother is probably the best to ever play the position. My whole point is, look at his numbers and his wins in his 2 full seasons and tell me that he isn't a solid young QB in this league. I will go out on a sac-religious Cowboy limb here... If you asked me TODAY, to chose a starter for our team, I'd take Manning over Romo. Manning has done a lot more in the NFL than Romo has, and if you compare Eli's first 8 games of '05 against Romo's first 8 of '06, Manning was just as impressive. |

I went to the pre-season game last night and the game was a tale of two halves.
The first half had both teams play their starters. Despite a great first play for the Jets (and a horrible start for the Giants' D - my brother said he thought the corner slipped, I still think he and the safety was burned on coverage), the Giants were the superior team in most facets of the game. The defense was solid, with Osi and Tuck tearing through the Jets' line - making them regret trading Kendall at this point. The Jets were held to ONE first down in the first half and the defense even forced a safety. The offense was good; the running game was OK, but Eli Manning had his A game. I counted 3 bad passes from him; everything else was a catchable ball (2 of which were dropped) - featuring a great one to Anthony Mix - who maybe made the roster with this game - in the corner of the end zone late in the first half. Composed, calm, collected, this year may be Eli's. The nagging issue of Red Zone/Drive Finishing came up again and it was compounded by Lawrence Tynes' inability to kick a field goal - twice. He's a veteran...apparently. Sure, Tynes' made one but the Giants really should have been up 18-6 instead of 12-6. The second half featured the backups and the Jets' offense found themselves again whereas the Giants regressed and faltered. The Jets hit the Giants twice on quick scoring drives and despite a J.R. Reed diving one-handed interception; the Jets' reserves clearly showed their class. Kellen Clemens definitely made a case for himself. The Giants' backup will likely be Jared Lorenzen as Anthony Wright and Tim Hasselbeck both were not good. Ahmad Bradshaw showed some great speed and some power. He could be the 3rd RB or a return specialist by the end of preseason. Mix dropped a deep ball late; but by that time the momentum was clearly in the Jets' direction. Jets win the game, but the real one will be later this season. I like how the Giants' starters look; but the reserves are...well, they're pretty bad.

Well, this sucks - Giants getting hurt in practice of all places. WR David Tyree has a fractured wrist.
Guess the week keeps getting better and better for WR Anthony Mix as he's pretty much assured of a job now, from my understanding.

Why does Eli look great in the 2 minute drill yet during the course of the rest of the game he is a lot less effective?
I'll tell you why. It's because in the no huddle it's Eli calling the plays and making audibles. The game is in his hands. Throughout the rest of the game it's the coaching staff calling the plays, whether it be Coughlin or Gilbride. They can't feel the pulse of the game. Eli can. The one asset of Eli's that the Giants staff boasted about when drafting him was his Football IQ. Yet they don't let him use it. If I can see this I'm sure the staff has at least a small clue. Hopefully they cut the strings and let Eli do his thing this season. Until then he won't be able to act as the leader they need. I can't wait to see the beast named Brandon Jacobs carry the rock full time this year. People had a bleak outlook when Rodney Hampton's shoes were left to be filled by some undersized third down scatback name after a Hawaiian torch. Jacobs will be next in the long line of great NYG RBs. You saw a few glimpses of it last year. You get the full show this season. What worries me still is the secondary. Did I say the secondary worries me. Yes the secondary worries me.

Well, Big Blue, I believe Eli's going to have a great year if only because he went through the pre-season playing well and not throwing one single pick. This will be his break-out year (I hope) regardless of Tom Coughlin & his crew (I hope).
The secondary AND the linebackers worry me. Anyone on defense who isn't on the defensive line or isn't Antonio Pierce worries me - I don't have a lot of confidence in them to get a stop when they need to from what I've seen so far. But, hey, Strahan's coming -so that's something.
