McNabb the lame duck
I have heard this was major topic in Philly, but the fact that it is getting front page attention on ESPN get's my Cowboy's wiener going crazy. This is just the type of distraction the Cowboy's could use to ensure we finish a game or 2 ahead of Philly. And for those that thought this was a stupid draft pick, you now have some insite to just what Reid was thinking.
Personally I buy it, it goes with a thread I started a month or so ago, about how long can Reid and McNabb get by with winning Division titles with no SB titles. ESPN.com - NFL - Paolantonio: McNabb should know this is just how Philly rolls |

mcnabb is an injury plagued, 31 year old veteran in the league. hes a top5 QB undoubtedly when hes healthy. i have no doubt hes gonna play through this minor contraversy, because hes played through contraversy every year hes been in the league. this isnt even a big deal...the bigdeal no one is paying attention to is that hes been working so hard through rehab, and no onegives him credit for it. finally, the ealges arent gonna be at the top of the nfceast again this year because 1)they have just as good a roster, if not better than before (Defense looks awesome) 2) since when did anyone else in the division get that much better this offseason (your expecting a lot for the first year with wade)3) we have a team with lots of experience winning (4 consecutive conference championship visits, and, 5 division titles..or is it 6..i forget )4)we have allll soorttss of players who know they gotta play well or theyll be in for trouble (releases or trades) well be alright |

Hey this isn't the Eagle hatter in me Druzuz, I honestly think this story has legs. And this destraction is different, because this envovles McNabb looking over his shoulder... not some loud mouth WR, or fans that don't like him. They actually took a QB with thier first pick. The fact that he went on the radio and said he was shocked speaks volumes... if it wasn't in his head he wouldn't be publically talking about it.
As insane as Philly fans are, I think this could be a destraction this year, and one that McNabb hasn't faced in the past. If he comes out slow, or struggles to come back 100% from the injury this will be all they talk about it Philly, it will be every question he has to answer after every loss or poor performance. And that Druzuz is the definition of a destraction. |

You're comparing Montana... the ultimate preasure guy... Cool Joe... to McNabb, who many accuse of not being able to win the big game.
I LOVE MCNABB... don't take this wrong. I think he is one of the best in the league, but please... PLEASE do not compare him or his ability to handle preasure to Joe Montana. And is competition always a good thing period? Is this even about competition at the QB spot for Philly? I say no to both questions. McNabb is the starter, there is no competition for the job. This is about weather or not McNabb has a carreer year and keeps the buzzards away or if he stumbles and has to fight through all the "bring in Kolb talk". |

Back then, everyone in SF went "huh? WTF?" when the decision was made to deepen the backfield at the cost of a 2nd + 4th rounder (which is more than the Eagles spent on acquiring Kolb of course). Fans and media alike freaked out with speculation regarding the health, ability of the encumbent starter. But it's a win-win situation: either the encumbent rises to the challenge or he fails and you insert plan B. Nothing wrong with having a solid Plan B. |

Ok I hear you then... I thought you were making a connection to McNabb being able to step up like Montana did. Yeah I agree with you, that's why I agrued in the other thread that Kolb was a great pick for Philly. Kolb was the best QB left for their offense, and McNabb hasn't been healthy. I didn't however, expect this kind of article this early in the game. I really viewed it as an Aaron Rogers/Bret Farve kind of pick... which it may be... but you sure as hell weren't reading this stuff out of GB a few years ago. |

secondly, no, this wont be a distraction this year, maybe next year....maybe. if garcia would still be here there would prb be some big distractions...but hes not. like i said at the end of last season to some poor guy who though garcia was a god, Garcia wont be here at the beginning of this coming season. finally, kolb will be a rookie, as u know. he wont play this year unless mcnabb gets hurt, and if he beats out feely for the first backup job in camp. if ESPN is still talking about kolb in week one, and how shocked mcnabb is by then if the shock isnt wore off. if and only if there is any sembolance of a contravery still brewing by then. then, there will be a distraction to mcnabb. but thats a lot of ifs. and imo i doubt he will be destracted by anything when he steps out to run the offense he has been running for years now. when its game time, its game time...not the time to be thinking of who your team drafted to be there for you if u get hurt again. and mcnabb knows that |

All good points, but I still think as soon as McNabb struggles the talk will begin... weather that is week 2 or next season. He'll have "Kolb" talk lerking around every interception, loss, or hard hit.

meh, prb, but it will be a lot less intense than the gracia talk would have been had he stayed. that would have been a real ditraction this year. now, its more like, we got a fresh young guy waiting for a chance to come in and do what he does. i dont see why mcnabb would have that big a distraction from a rookie.

What I don't understand is why McNabb said he was "shocked" when they drafted Kolb. McNabb never finishes a season healthy, Garcia's gone, he's getting older, and they got no backup. Being shocked makes him sound like a selfish crybaby.

Now that we have the benefit of 20-20 hindsight, we should have seen the Kolb pick coming. I mean with McNabb missing 13 games over the last 2 seasons...with Garcia being released...with guys like AJ Feeley (bum), Kelly Holcomb (old) and Koy Detmer (LOL!) ???
COME ON! The writing was on the wall. No one saw it though, self included. |

As soon as it happened it slapped me right in the face... I mean that guy should be perfect for that offense. I remember thinking what a great pick with McNabb's recent history. McNabb is still a hoss in my book, but he has taken a pounding over his carreer, and played through most of it which just makes it worse. Yeah I thought it was a great pick and took a beating for that on the other thread.

I'll give you an example. In the NHL, i think a team like Ottawa needs to explode their team if they don't win the Stanley cup this year, they have been one of the top 5 teams for quite some time now and they can't do anything but be that. Why win titles if you can't win the big thing you want? The Steelers, when Big Ben first came in, had an outstanding year...did they win the superbowl? Nope. But the year they win, they were mediocre for some good chunks of the season. It was a solid built team that was just not clicking right away, the pieces were there and they could have been dominant just like the year before but couldn't do it. Philly is soo hell bent on being a great team in the Season, they forget...great seasonal players don't always translate to great playoff performers. You learn a lot about that watching the NHL, where you don't get just 1 game eliminations. McNabb has had a lot of time to prove he can be a big game player in the playoffs, to me he hasn't delivered. Give him another year, then start to look at who you can get for him, while his value is still high. |
