Jones Expendable?

SI.com - Scorecard Daily - NFL: Look for Dallas to ship RB Jones on draft day - Wednesday April 18, 2007 10:23AM

Interesting. There were a few rumours a couple months back that Julius Jones could be on the move. It would be something too see first, if he was traded, and secondly, what the return would be, and whether it would allow the Boys to address a few problems at once in the draft.

Dallas doesn't have a bonefied Running Back that can carry the full load... neither Julius nor Marion are capable starters, but they compliment each other very well. That being said, I could definately see us sending Jones packing in a couple different scenarios...

a) To move up in the first to grab someone like Levi Brown, Marshawn Lynch (or even Adrian Peterson) or Darrelle Revis
b) If we're offered a mid-2nd round pick since Jones becomes the best option available once Lynch and Peterson are off the board
c) If a Pick+Player trade was made that would significantly impact our lineup next year (don't think this one will happen, but who knows.)

If we do trade Jones, we will take a RB in the 1st day, that I promise you. Look for a guy like Antonnio Pittman or Lorenzo Booker if we don't use Jones to move up and get Lynch/Peterson. Pittman is a Jones-esq RB with better vision who runs much harder and doesn't go down to arm tackles. Booker is alot like Tyson Thompson in that he's semi-one deminsional but has far more upside and potential then Thompson. Lynch and Peterson could both come in and play BEHIND Barber for a year, then we use Barber as trade bait and promote Lynch or Peterson to full-time Starter since either would be capable of bearing the full load by themselves.

I called for this when we had 3 or 4 good RBs on the market. Michael Turner is still out there, I would love to see us go after him if we don't have a plan for moving up in the draft.

I don't see us trading Jones for another RB or something of that sort. I only see us trading him + a pick to move up in the draft and select a good RB. I wouldn't be so happy if we did so b/c I actually like the guy, he needs to learn how to bounce it to the outside, but i like the guy. If JJ gets traded to another team, then Barber's value will go down, unless we get another good outside runner. I like the current Cowboy's two headed rushing monster and don't wanna see it go. JJ is the home run hitter and Barber is the grinder and if we can find a more consistant big chunk runner like Jones, or better, then I don't have a problem with the move, but I don't see it likely happening.

Turner is a RFA, so we don't have to trade to pick him up we just have to pay him more than SD will... and considering the $$$$ they have dumped in LT that shouldn't be too hard. Tennessee is the only other team I have heard of bringing him in for a look, which baffels me because the guy is a stud. I would much rather see us do what you said and trade Jones to move up... but not to select Lynch... but to maybe get Rivas or Branch.

I know it's a reach to throw branch in there since he had been considered a top 5 pick, but his stock is falling fast and he could slip to the teens.

Actually we'd have to give up our 1st and 3rd if we wanted to buy Turner, otherwise we have to trade for him.

Why a 1st and 3rd... he isn't franchised and has very little production?

If that's the case give me Lynch

The Chargers tendered him as a 1st and 3rd (same as how we tendered Crayton as a 2nd) if any team wants to make an offer, they have to offer a certain amount of money... the Chargers then have the option of matching the offer, and if they don't, they get the other teams 1st and 3rd... that's how Restricted Free Agency works.

MaddHatter is correct. Turner was tendered very high with that 1st and 3rd rounder. Heck we could package JJ a 1st and a 3rd and get Adrian Peterson out of the draft, and I see AP being a much better RB than Turner.

I thought pick compensation was based on production?

Yeah I didn't know the price tag on Turner was that high. I really thought pick compensation was based on production.

maybe we could trade Jones and some other dependable player to move up in the first round.

This is just going to make next Saturday more fun. We can package Jones and our first pick to probably move us up aroun 5-7 spots. Depened on what other teams do and who's left on the board will determine that. It's going to be great to watch that's for sure.

Yall think there is any chance they move up to get Ginn Jr? He is slipping on a lot of mocks and could still be there around 18, that would let us pull Newman off the PR duties.

hell no, I want Meachem, Bowe or Jarrett for recievers, Ginn runs terrible routes.

I don't want Ginn either I think he is a 2nd round talent... I am just trying to 2nd guess the reason for the Cowboys throwing this news out there. Obviously there are 2 or 3 players they think they can move up and get. I really don't expect Lynch to be obtainable, but no one thought Stephen Jackson would fall as far as he did. I think this is either for Ginn or Revis, that's my opinion. Let's hope its Revis and not Ginn. I really don't see Lynch getting past Greenbay and I don't see Dallas moving infront of them.
