California, Florida and Texas are always the best.

I don't think there is much doubt about that.. Those schools consistently pop out the best prospects year in and year out.

as mentioned, florida, cali, and texas are the premier talent pools as far as high school talent is concerned. after them, there is a pretty steep dropoff in production. i don't even know why ohio was a unique choice. it should fall under "other".

Here is an article about the top teams in the country:
http://ssfootball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=567125

Here are the number of teams and ranking from the states included in the poll:
State - Rankings - Total
California - 5,14,18,26,35,40 - 6
Florida - 1,16,23,34 - 4
Ohio - 4,12,29 - 3
Texas - 3,10,21,44 - 4

Only one other state had 3 teams but none of the 3 were ranked higher then 31.

I think Ohio belongs in the conversation with the other three but after those 4 I would say there is a dropoff.

that's fair enough, but i would put more stock into states that produce nfl talent. national team rankings are one thing, but doesn't mean much if none/few of the high school players in the state get the the pro ranks.

i read a miami herald article once that explored this very topic. it was a very lengthy and indepth article that i wish i could find. some of the top 10 nfl producing schools included florida, cali, texas, penn, north carolina, georgia, ohio, etc.

it annoyed me when i read that article and saw north carolina up there. we lose so many of our instate high school talent to colleges and universities outside north carolina. most of them go to the powerhouse programs in florida, or to the schools in adjacent states (tennessee, va tech, georgia).

I know what you mean.

Alot of people at my school who play football went to college out of state.

Texas just seems to be so into it. Not that the others aren't, but there's just some magic about it.

People here are nuts for it. Too much in fact. In a lot of these small towns here playing high school football is the highlight of most people's lives. Kind of sad if you ask me.

In Ohio, its a bigger thing then you'd think. Not in the big cities (Cbus, Cincy, Cleveland, Toledo, Akron, Dayton) so much, but its crazy out in rural. Massilion is a Mecca of high school football.

New Jersey I believe had the highest ranked recruit in the nation this past season. They will never be up there with the big states obviously but they are producing some talent of late. The last great one I can remember was Jim Ellis, a MLB out of Patterson Catholic I believe.

I voted for Florida as I think they have the highest level of competition from top to bottom but I can't deny that for sheer numbers California is impressive but that is to be expeceted considering the difference in populations between the two states.
