Athletes and Education...

Being a former student-athlete, I saw first hand the lack of effort the athletes gave towards education. Some tried, but most really didn't care, as long as they could play their sport.

I hope since my days as a student-athlete 10 years ago, things have progressed and athletes are taking their education seriously. The fact is they are one injury away from having to face getting a job in the real world...

Trust me, most of them don't.

Only the female athletes, Lacrosse and hockey players actually give a damn.

atheletes and education

Not only do the players not care, but the administration doesn't seem to care either. It's more important to get the money from having the attendance than it is to have players that could actually count the money.

Which is why I don't go to most of the games... except the ones I play in... (lacrosse and hockey)

I think the NCAA is trying to change things and put the student back in the classrooms. Well, I believe this some of the time, then I read about the Linda Myers stuff from UT and the reports from Auburn and I shake my head. Academic Fraud is one of the worst offenses as far as what the NCAA should be looking for, instead they'd rather search for small time bosters helping a player out.

Unfortunately that is the truth. I my junior college, I had people who had trouble doing 1/3 X 2/3 , they were lost... I tutored a few of them. It was sad, but its a reality. Many coast there way through with some kind of degreen in Sports Management or some off the wall degree if they do graduate that has no real life job opportunities..

Unfortunately, "student athletes" of all divisions have the opportunity to coast their way to a degree. I have seen very few take academics seriously, even those who had no chance to make it to the pros took the easy way out. I would love it if the NCAA placed more focus on academic honesty.

Where the problem starts

I don't just blame the colleges. The problems begin in junior high and high school where the players are passed regardless of their grades so that no one has to deal with the problem and the teams can keep winning.
