High School to the NFL... why not?

They used to allow this in the NBA but recently changed the rules.

However, I dont think this was ever allowed in the NFL.

It would be interesting to see someone like Jimmy Clausen make the jump from High School to the Pros. Making him dominate the NCAA ranks for 2 years, doesnt' make much sense when after this High School year he will pretty much ready for the NFL competition..

That would not be interesting it would be a disaster.

1st it would take away the excitement of seeing him compete in college for at least 2 years versus sitting on the bench in the NFL for at least 2 years.

2nd I doubt he would be phsically ready to compete in the NFL and take the pounding an NFL QB takes.

3rd if he never makes it in the NFL he will be forever labeled a bust and a failure but if he has a succesfull college career he will at least have that.

In short horrible idea and if I was talking to you in person I would question your sanity.

Don't forget that boys that age are still growing. Some don't stop until after they are in their twenties. Football is hard enough on the body, but putting them in that position before their bodies are fully grown could spell disaster.

At least their bodies don't take the same kind of beating in the NBA.

no way an 18 year old body holds up to the pounding the NFL guys take. the few people who may have had a shot at it would have been Herschel Walker, Adrian Peterson and maybe Marcus Dupree (if you guys know about him you would agree).

personally, i think only a receiver would have chance, as they probably take the least abuse of all positions other than punter/kicker.

Yeah, but it only takes that one good break and you are out for life. The kids need time to mature (physically and mentally). A good college program is part of that.

I think jumping straight to the NFL would be a disaster too. It is so physically demanding and like other's have mentioned, an 18 yr old is at a significant disadvantage even if they have all the talent in the world.

Not to mention improvement of skills

No matter how talented they are, there is still room for improvement. The better they are for the draft, the better they get paid. My husband grew 6 inches after highschool. That would be a significant advantage for any player!

There's probably a once in a generation high school athlete that could, but I doubt it. The speed diffference from high school to college is significant, as is the college to pro difference. The difference from high school to pros would take a lot of time to get used to. Also, learning a much, much more complicated schemes to learn. Like basketball players (not named Lebron), they are better off going to college to develop their game then go pro as an underclassman.

I'm leery of QBs leaving College as a junior, can't even imagine a 19 year old holding a clipboard.

And when Clarett was trying to bust in early the NFLPA was vocaly against him coming in.

Improving their skills is great and important, but protecting their bodies is even more so. Basketball doesn't take as much out of a person as throwing your body up against a tree might. Stay in school!

The first time Jimmy Clausen dropped backed to pass and Ray Lewis came through the line and hit him they would be receiving friends with a funeral to follow.

It would be a disaster for football. Football would be trying to recover from the same degradation in quality that basketball is recovering from right now.

I had to giggle. I shouldn't, but I had to.

It's true, though. Just line those highschoolers up next to the pro players and you will realize just how much growing they need to do.

But we all know football players take shortcuts.

Even with short cuts, you are limited by what mother nature has given you. And if you try to get beyond that, it will kill you. Don't push them. Eighteen year old boys don't have the sense God gave a chicken. They need all the help they can get making decisions like this.
