well Duck.. we are all biased . otherwise we wouldn't be fans. as we got to see last year with oregon & other teams. the spread has to all work out. it can have one person missing like an injured QB & the year is about over with. the complexity of the spread puts a lot on the QB & it takes a dang good one to do this. i guess it's ok to laugh now at Bama about 3 years ago whe n they went thru 3 QB's. about half the team was injured. i can't remember what year it was now, chicago bears went thru 2 or 3 QB's & just let walter payton do it all.

Yeah, I agree. I love the way Meyer's OC calls plays too. Until they've gotten a comfortable lead, the offense doesn't get too conservative. They keep trying to score until the 4th quarter, and some of the play-calls are awesome. (Harvin taking direct snaps, double passes, running Play-Action from a 5-wide set, etc.)
I do have to say, I'm looking into the D-2 NAIA offenses. After watching a close game in my college's season opener, I was very impressed with the other team's offense. From the analyst's point of view (since I was the only one in the crowd that recognized each style..), the offense looked like a very nice blend of the following 3 systems: Tx Tech Spread Power-I run game Spread Option On the drive that gave the other team the lead, their quarterback spent 12 plays in 5-wide, until they punched it in at the 1 from a GL set. Their first series looked like some Rodriguez, the second was power run, and each one after blended the two, trying to catch our defense off guard. I was very impressed with the other coach's playcalling, and would love to see a higher level college try the system out. |

A big point here is a lot of small schools implement the spread to try and level the playing field against better schools, i.e. Appalachian State vs Michigan. That is why you rarely find the national champion running a spread. They can win with traditional football.

As for Appalachian State. They had a spread offense well before the Michigan game. Oh, and by the way....Appalachian State with their potant spread attack is a 2 time defending National Champion. Just sayin' Some smaller, undersized programs do run a spread to compensate for talent. Other programs (WVU, UF, UO) run the spread to utilize superior speed and athleticism.

I agree. I almost wish I could find a way to convince my school's coach to implement the spread. Right now, we're still trying to win by playing most of the game out of the Singleback formation. Our starting QB broke his collarbone last week, so it might be time to quickly install a few plays from a new system to help us gain an advantage.
But yeah, let's look at the undersized or underpowered teams that have used the spread to great success. Texas Tech Hawaii BYU Texas A&M North Texas LA Lafayette App St. Deleware And we also know that as GT's new coach joked, the Wishbone offense is just "a variant of the spread." Nothing could be closer to the truth. Wishbone is basically the Spread's angry father. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing two of these lovable offenses go at it this weekend. Auburn v. LSU should be a decent game. |
