Tailgating
Who here tailgates? Do the tailgaters at your university of choice get pretty crazy, or are they relatively tame?
We have our first game against Fordham coming up shortly, and the tailgating promises to be anything but calm. |

Nah. If you had tailgating at the baseball games then people would never go into the stadium. They'd just flick on the radio, listen to the game, and kick back with some meat and beer. On second thought, maybe all sports do need tailgateage.

we have a notorious tailgating culture here at nc state. unfortunately, our administration has been working very hard to kill it.
they recently passed new rules. some of those are: no kegs, beer is the only alcholic drink allowed, no one admitted into lots until 4 hours prior to kickoff, no bands or performers permitted (includes people who just want to play their guitar), noise regulation which is ridiculously low (can't have someone two cars from you be able to hear your stereo), only those with permits are allowed in the lots.we currently have a 58,000 seat stadium, and there probably is atleast 80,000 (read that figure somewhere) people tailgating on gameday. before the new rules, it was very common practice for people to campout in the lots the night before games. one of my buddy's is a pretty well accomplished artist in the area, and he used to set up a small stage in the lot where most of the students tailgated. here is an overhead photo of the area. what you see is about 70% of the tailgating areas. every bit of area that you see if normally packed with tailgaters. i remember one overnight tailgate that my friends and i had organized. the game was set to kickoff at 2pm saturday. a few friends and i set up camp around 6pm friday, and we called up some friends. at it's peak we had about 30 people out there with us. we grilled out, and some people playing their guitars, had a satellite tv set up, and went through 2 kegs. we started our pig at 6am, so that it'd be ready for lunch time. we also had some brunswick stew, burgers, hotdogs, and all the trimmings with pig. this was the last great tailgating event that we got to host, because of a tragic incident. 2 visiting tailgaters who happened to be marines were shot and murdered right before kickoff by 2 guys (one of which was a student). because of this, the adminstration and some wet-blankets blamed the raucous culture of "the fairgrounds lot", which is primarily where students tailgated (in the photo, bottom right corner with the rows of dirt and grass). nothing like this had ever happened before, and only 1 of the people involved was associated with the university in anyway. we were set up about 20 yards from where the shooting happened. basically, the two shooters had driven recklessly by where the 2 marines and their friends were tailgating. the area is filled with a ton of people, including in the dirt road lanes. one of the marines yelled at the driver. the driver and his brother, the passenger got out and they got into a fist fight with the marines. they essentially got their butts kicked. as they were leaving, one of them (the passenger) yelled "i'll be back." they returned some minutes later, and the passenger had a gun with him this time. they found the two marines. he shot one in the face (died on scene), and the other in the neck (died in route to the hospital). they fled, but were caught a few hours later. so, because of that one incident, our tailgating experience has been turned down a few notches. it's still a hell of a time, but not what it used to be. ![]() and here's a news video about the new tailgating: My News 14 Cast Last edited by tbell ncsu : 09-08-2006 at 10:26 PM. |

Let me say that you are one impressive tailgater! I don't think I could put that kind of time and energy into it. If I'm camping, it's in the woods. If I'm near pavement then there better be indoor plumbing.
As for hurting the masses because of the minority - welcome to life. A few bad apples spoils the whole bunch. |

I was going to tailgate for our first college football game today, but it ended up DOWNPOURING like you wouldn't believe right when I was about to leave. Figures, it cleared up half an hour later. Ah well, I'll just go to the game.

Tail gating is %30 of why I go to the game pretty much
. When we bring a lot of people we usually load up on food and set out like 5 tables and have a huge party before the game. But when it's just family we only have like 1 grill with 1-2 tables and just relaxing. |
