Best College Football Coach..

There is quite a bit of quality college coaches.. but which one you give the nod to as the best?

Charlie Weiss
Joe Paterno
Bobby Bowden
Stoopes
??

All are SOLID, but right now I would give the Nod to Weiss. What he has done with that ND team is amazing. Under willingham, they were subpar. Now he has taken them to prominence once again.

The others were much better in their prime, but have aged.. your thoughts?

I think it depends on what you're looking for when you say best coach. Are you talking about the best coach right now? Are you talking about the active coach who has been the best over his career. If it's the 2nd one, the it's probably a 2 man race between Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden. Best Coach right now, I would probably vote for Pete Carroll.

Joe Paterno must be one of the best if he'S been there for 40 years... Bowden is a great one too...

but I think that the guy who was in Boise State and now In Colorado is a god one too... can't recall his name

Mike Bellotti at Oregon. Only one losing season since 1995 when he started.

mentioning weiss in the company of bowdens and paternos is simply ludacris at this point.

1. weiss needs to coach in the college ranks for several more years before he should even be considered as one of college's greatest head coaches. it's way to premature at this point.
2. not only has he only been in the ncaa for just one season, but he was coaching notre dame. it wouldn't take the greatest coach in the world to turn that team into a winning program. even in their worst season, notre dame will always get the playing talent. all notre dame needs is a pretty good coach.

dirtyhawgs, let me say that i'm not attacking your post directly. your post just gave me an invitation to disuade everyone from mentioning charlie weiss.

I'm not a big Weiss fan either, but I am a little gorged on the whole Joe Pa and Bobby Bowden fan club too. It's crazy to say anyone would need to coach as many years as these two guys to acheive the same greatness. Christ, these guys are probably both going to die of strokes on the field within a few years. They've been coaching for EONS, so it's not necessarily fair to lump them with everyone else.

Well said. Ty Willingham looked great there after one year as well.

I think Pete Carrol has to be considered the best coach right now following the amazing 3 year run USC just had. He really turned that program around and brought them to the pinnacle of greatness.

I think Bob Stoops should also get consideration for turning around what was a struggling OU program.

i would put pete carroll in the same boat as charlie weiss... and throw larry coker in there as well. all three are at powerhouse programs that really only need a pretty good, not necessarily a great, coach to succeed. i will give carroll his due though. his trojans have been monsters the past couple of years. eventhough they play in a creampuff conference, they still perform up to par in ooc games and bcs bowls. if pete can keep this up for another 7-10 years, then i would be willing to label his a one of the greats.

of those three, i would rank them:
1. carroll
2. weiss
3. coker

My vote goes to Joe Paterno...he's done a lot at Penn State and has proven that he is one of the greatest coaches in NCAA history due to his record/bowl wins.
