Geez..... the guy just signed a 10 year, 20 million dollar deal with Louisville last year. I thought that might be enough to keep him.

I am already hearing the name of Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe as a potential replacement. Anybody know anything about this guy?

You guys are getting a play calling genius. I'm not so sure about his character, you know, just last year, he signed a 10 year deal and said he was going to stick around for awhile. I am really kind of pissed off about him leaving right now, but I guess money talks. He was already making over 2 million per season, and held the key to the City. He'll make more money, but he may come to regret his decision to leave. The NFL is alot tougher to win year in and year out.

The situations are really really different. The Alabama job was open for a few months and in that time Saban vehemently denied he had interest again and again to reporter's faces. He personally pissed off dozens of media members who cover the sport.

I think this latest Petrino move didn't have the weeks of rumors surrounding it and although he contradicted a statement he had made - it doesn't come off as lying because he wasn't directly answering questions about this job.

Not sure he's stupid. Atlanta has a lot of talent and the owner wants badly to win. There are far worse jobs in the NFL (Oakland -working for David, Arizona - Bidwell)(Pittsburgh- following Cowher would be tough). He could regret leaving college but I mean didn't Louisville just have their best year ever? How much more can he accomplish?

I doubt the money is why he left... it's more likely it's a promotion. And when he said he wasn't leaving, I think he was speaking in regards to the oppty with Bama and Miami. The oppty to go to the NFL is possibly something he didn't forsee as likely and a HC is a VERY hard oppty to pass over.

Well, yeah, I consider more money to be is a promotion. Why wouldn't he have foreseen it as likely? He was offered the Raiders Head Coaching job last season and passed it up, then signed the 10 year, $25 million deal with Louisville. At that press conference, he stated that he and his family had decided that Louisville was good place for him to stay for awhile. His exact quotes from that contract extension/raise news conference last year are posted on some other boards (Falcons). If you read that quote, you can understand why folks here in Louisville are little miffed. However, I do not blame the guy for doubling his salary, but it still hurts.

Anybody know anything about the Tulsa coach Steve Kragthorpe?

There was a time where I remained open-ended as to whether or not Vick would ever develop into a hall-of-fame quarterback. In conversations with many of my friends they would routinely label Vick as a bust, and I kept on retorting that the primary reason people are so hard on Vick is because of the high expectations placed upon him.

I used to compare Vick to Steve Young all the time as Young was someone who was labeled as a huge bust, but his career was saved when he was paired up with a great coach (Walsh) and a great supporting cast.

Perhaps Petrino will be to Vick what Walsh was to Young. Perhaps, but the book is starting to close on Vick. And I am starting to give up on the idea that he will ever develop into the hall-of-fame quarterback so many thought he would become when he entered the NFL.

My main problem with Vick is that I believe there is some amount of truth in Jim Mora Sr's accusation that he is a coach killer. Of course, this is merely my perception of a player who I don't see or read about that much, but I just don't get the feeling Vick is someone who tries all that hard between Monday and Saturday. He strikes me as someone who prefers to freelance on the football field.

All that said, the book is not yet closed. An immense problem with today's culture is that people are all too quick to write someone off after three seasons. True, Vick now has six years under his belt. To some degree, we've been in "put up or shut up" mode on him for two straight seasons...but I still think it would be rash to write him off. The bottom line is that he has great raw talent. And he's still fairly young. So I would not at all be surprised if Petrino puts it all together and gets this kid playing at hall-of-fame levels.

I would not bet on it, but Arthur Blank had no other play to make. The entire franchise is invested in Vick, so you might as well do all you can to allow that investment to finally pay off.
