I still think the Steelers are the team to beat and until the Browns can go into Heinz Field and knock them off they're merely paper champions. Also don't count the Ravens out, they're a decent QB away from being right in the mix.

I think both are teams to beat. I agree with you about the Ravens. I would never count out a team in the AFC North. Any team could win the division. I don't think the Browns can beat just anyone. They are up there with the Patriots, and Indy on paper, but I agree til they beat good teams more than once(the Steelers) they haven't proved they have got any better.

The Browns were seen as having the worst QB situation in the league at this time last year. It was a great move to get a quality QB at the #22 pick and get him signed to a deal that costs the team very little. The team needed a QB of the future, and Savage got one. How is that stupid?
Bingo.

Ravens are a QB away, but where exactly are they going to get this QB? Even if Ryan falls to them, he'll very likely be no help this year.

Derek Anderson-type miracle (more like very much unexpected, but you get the idea) seasons don't happen that often.

The Steelers are still the team to beat. On paper, I think the Browns have closed the gap by a lot, but we'll have to see how it plays out.

I don't know how far ahead the Steelers really are. Personally, I think there isn't much seperating the top from the bottom.

Steelers offensive line was bad last year. That Rothlisberger had the season he did anyway really shows the caliber of break-out season he had. Now Faneca is gone and either Kemoeatu or a rookie will be replacing him. I think Kemo has a future is a mauling drive blocker, but needs dramatic improvement pass blocking before he should start. Hartwig is a gamble to replace Mahan. With the tagging of Starks, you also have to wonder about the future of the highly paid and oft-injured Smith. He is in the final year(s) of his contract and releasing him would provide some much-needed cap room. Colon, Starks, Kemoeatu, Simmons, Mahan, Hartwig and Essex is a pretty poor collection of talent to cobble a line together with. Even throwing a 1st or 2nd round rookie into the mix leaves much to be desired.

On top of that, they have not added anybody other than Moore to back-up Parker with. Moore is a good scatback, but lacks the durability to step in and start should Parker be slow to recover. Davenpoop isn't more than a chage-of-pace guy either, so RB has to rank high in need. At WR, they only have 2 quality players, so adding another WR is yet another high-need area.

All-in-all, I could see the Steelers taking a step or two back this year.

As for the Bengals, they are the best team on paper, but they are in full blown self-destruct mode. A purging is needed. That will cost them a season or two while they clean house and rebuild.

Ravens are just getting old. Defense is still loaded with talent, albeit a bit thin at DB. Offensively, they need to rebuild the offensive line and get a QB. A tall order. Still, Boller wasn't as horrible as he was previously, so they could manage to float around .500 with a run-heavy attack and that defense.

I really like the Browns chances this year. Last off-season, many of us commented on how they are a team on the rise and their investment in the offensive line will serve them well. Now they have one of the better lines in the league (especially if Bentley is capable of anything) and outstanding talent at the skill positions. With Rogers and Williams shoring up the defensive line, they are entering the draft without any glarring holes to fill... which is good because they don't have any picks to do it.

As for the Quinn trade being a lost gamble, don't be stupid. It has been ONE YEAR and now the Browns have two young QBs on their roster with cap-friendly deals. Considering the King's Ransom teams will pay for QBs, the odds that they cannot recoup the mid-1st round pick they gave up for Quinn when they inevitably trade one of those QBs off is exceedingly slim. As a Vikes' fan, I would give up our 1st round for either of them without a moment's hesitation.

The Steelers are such a measuring stick for the Browns that the difference is more mental than real.

Interesting point; it's not just a team to shoot for, it's also a team that basically all Browns fans hate intensely.

You guys really have something going for you, though. Hopefully for the sakes of Browns fans, they can build on the previous year instead of falling backwards like a certain AFC North team has done.

Posts like these are why you're so valuable to this forum, JCD.

I agree about Cincinnati. They have the sickness, the culture of losing. The front office, which showed promise of improvement a few years back, has started to raise its ugly head again. This team reminds me more of the 90's abominations than of the few comparatively decent previous years.

Oh yeah, and on top of that, our defensive personnel sucks.

Browns had a cake schedule in 07' and still missed the playoffs, by getting beat by a depleated Bengals team. If Cleveland wins more than 8 games I will be stunned, their schedule is brutal and last year beat 1 team with a winning record. I love watching browns fans get excited over smokin mirrors, they finish 3rd in the AFC North in 08'

Bank on it!!!

Hey, who knows. The schedule last years was supposed to be tough also, but several of the predicted good teams fell apart. The same may happen this year.

Who are they going to finish behind Pitt and who? Def. not Cincy with all the focus on CJ not going to play, Cincy will have their heads up their you know whats and just become a downfall. After releasing Henry who's your 3rd WR? Henry was better than anyone they will get, yes he has a high amount of off field problems thats why you get someone that knows what there doing to restructure his contract and make it like what Pacmans will be. TJ only had so many TD's cause the focus of their offense is well was CJ.
