Quest for Six Rings (Madden 2009)

Quote:
For those of you not familiar with Madden diaries, they are basically a fun way to keep track of your Madden dynasty and allow other people to comment on the fantasy world as it unfolds. I will be controlling the New England Patriots, starting before this preseason, and hoping to guide them to the Super Bowl. I will NOT be playing the games, however, as I find that makes it less fun. Instead, I will be acting as general manager, handling the roster moves and such. I hope you enjoy it, and please comment!

Oh, and by the way, it's all fake! Even the background about me! Just covering my ass.
We all saw what happened last year in the Super Bowl: the mighty fell. The New England Patriots, who had soared to offensive records and a 16-0 record in the regular season, could do nothing to stop a relentless New York Giants team from taking what could have been the fourth ring for the Patriots. Whether or not you believe the loss was a fluke or if the Patriots were just outplayed, there is no doubt that the hangover for Patriots fans was long and painful.

2007 was supposed to be a season of redemption. Stuffing every victory down the throat of all the haters and non-believers. Proving how great we were, spy scandal or not, and winning yet another Super Bowl Championship. Instead, we would always be shown on ESPN Classic as "that game" where David beat Goliath. Were we football's tragic hero? Had our hubris gotten to us? The mighty seemed to be falling in more than one game, but from their dynastic pedestal all together. The offseason proved no differently.

Rumors swirling over Patriots' general manager Scott Pioli's departure eventually came true. Shortly after the loss to the Giants in the Super Bowl, the salt was poured into the wound as he left to join the same organization that pierced the hearts of Patriots fans worldwide. The longtime friendship of Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli seemed to have been weakened by "SpyGate", and this did nothing to put down those assumptions. Who would take the place of one of the NFL's top ranked personnel wizards?

Enter me, Rich Bregnard, a former Suffolk Law Student from Boston, Massachusetts. I had played football for three years at Boston College before graduating with a degree in political science. I was not the kind of player that would ever have a career in football, so I instead intended to get into the business of football. I went to Suffolk Law School to get my law degree, but I also wanted to help with their upstart football program. In doing so, I got recognized by the same school I played for, Boston College, and begun scouting for them.

It was when the shift in the National Football League took place when I joined the Patriots' organization. When Scott Pioli and Bill Belichick entered the scene in Foxboro, I came as well, although to much less press coverage. None, in fact. I was still wet behind the ears, and I was eager to learn. Now, with almost eight years of scouting and contract negotiations under my belt, I have been handed the reigns to one of the best run organizations in sports history. Pressure? Just a little.

Luckily, I have more than a solid base to work with. I have the best coach in football and arguably the best quarterback in football in Bill Belichick and Tom Brady. We have stars like Randy Moss, Richard Seymour, Tedy Bruschi, and Rodney Harrison. We have tremendous role players like Kevin Faulk, Sammy Morris, Jarvis Green, and Wes Welker. Our offensive line, despite the showing in the Super Bowl, is one of the best in the league. However, we are not without our issues.

We are aging, which means I am going to have to put my fingerprints on this team a lot, and fast. This is my team now, not Scott Pioli's and I hope to incorporate my kind of player to each position. In some places we already have that kind of player, but in others we do not. Whether through trade, signing, or the draft, I will have to do what I can to keep this dynasty afloat after this shake-up. I will have to do what I can to get to the number: six. That's how many rings this team needs to be the best of all time.

Time to get to work.

I am on the phone with a few agents and a few other general managers before the preseason starts to shape up the roster and perhaps make a few moves. Nothing official yet, but I have interest in the Eagles' cornerback/safety Sheldon Brown. Despite his age, 29, he is extremely fast and is a tremendous cover man in both man and zone. It will depend on what the Eagles want in return. We have our eyes on some free agents as well, but nobody is "about to be signed".

C Doug Datish (2 yrs.)
LE Kenechi Udeze (3 yrs.)
FB Lorenzo Neal (1 yr.)
RE Simeon Rice (1 yr.)

Released
LT Wesley Britt
C Dan Connelly
LE Santonio Thomas

Trades

NE receives: CB Chris Gamble
CAR receives: FS James Sanders, CB Jason Webster, NE Third Round Pick

NE receives:
CB/FS Sheldon Brown
PHI receives: FB Heath Evans, NE Second Round Pick, NE Fifth Round Pick

NE receives: MLB D'Qwell Jackson, CLE Second Round Pick, CLE Fourth Round Pick
CLE receives: RE Richard Seymour

Extensions

LG Logan Mankins was signed through 2012 with a deal worth $29.5M. ($6.35M bonus.)
LG Russ Hochstein was signed through 2010 with a deal worth $5M. ($960k bonus.)

---

Obviously, the big story is regarding the trades. The big one, at least as far as departures go, is the one involving Richard Seymour. Jarvis Green seems ready to start, and the signings of Simeon Rice and Kenechi Udeze will help as well. In return, we got a solid, young middle linebacker in Jackson to pair up with Mayo to, hopefully, create a great tandem in the middle. We also got two picks to help lessen the impact of losing the ones we did in acquiring Gamble and Brown. Sheldon will be starting at free safety for us, as he is slated to be one of the best in the league. Gamble will be our number one corner for sure, and he will help our depth tremendously with Bryant now on the third receiver. Our defense backfield may now be our strength on defense.

As far as the other transactions go, they were mainly bringing in players I liked. Lorenzo Neal is the big one there, as he will bring in a big time talent at fullback. Extending Logan Mankins and Russ Hochstein was a priority for me, so I am glad I got it done before the preseason.

Unfortunately, we experienced our first severe injury of the season in this one. RT Nick Kaczur went down hard in the first half, suffering from a severe concussion. Kaczur's doctors are unsure whether or not he will play again this season, but it is very unlikely. Right now Ryan O'Callaghan is the slated starter at right tackle, but that may change if any moves are made.

After the loss of Nick Kaczur we decided to cut HB LaMont Jordan, who had not gotten any carries in the preseason, and signed rookie tackle Tony Hills to a one-year deal. Hills is normally a left tackle, but he adds more depth in our line regardless.

We a few smaller moves after last week's disappointing loss.

NE receives: CHI Fifth Round Pick
CHI receives: WR Kelley Washington

With the extra cap space we went out and signed 17-year veteran Keith Traylor to a one-year contract to help with our defense. We have really struggled, especially on run defense, and I just hope we are getting warmed up.

The reason why this game was so close? It wasn't the 420 to 181 total offense in favor of the Pats. It wasn't the 677 to 391 total yards in favor of the Pats. It wasn't the 33:28 to 26:32 difference in time-of-possession in favor of the Pats. Hm, what could it be? Perhaps it was the fact that we committed eleven penalties for 107 yards. Or, maybe, it was the fact that was were four-for-twelve on third down conversions. The bright spots? Well, we did win, and we did perform well offensively. I love the fact that we gained 124 yards on the ground. Brady completed passes to nine different receivers, and it was nice to see Sam Aiken get involved with the touchdown. On the offensive line front, Ryan O'Callaghan did give up a sack, but overall he did a decent job. All I know is that we are going to have to play better than this to beat the Jets next week.

This game was hard fought until the very end. It looked like the Jets might pull out the upset late in the fourth quarter, but Tom Brady worked his magic yet again, driving down the field and tying the game up with a pass to Wes Welker for a touchdown. Overtime proved to be a struggle as well, with nearly ten minutes drained off the clock before Brady hit Moss to end the game. The Jets came to play, but were simply out-played in the end by Brady, Moss, and Maroney. Laurence showed us a spark in this one with 208 all-purpose yards, which I love to see. Moss was Moss, putting together another mind-blowing performance. I look forward to meeting the Jets again, but it's on to the Dolphins.
