Phins will trade Taylor
ESPN.com news services
The Miami Dolphins, having signed Michigan's Jake Long as the first pick of the 2008 NFL draft, are shopping Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor in hopes of acquiring another first-round pick, according to media reports in South Florida. The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that according to two NFL executives, the Dolphins are trying to land another first-round pick in order to secure a player they're concerned won't be on the board when they lead off the second round with the No. 32 pick overall. And the Palm Beach Post reported that Taylor, who is still competing on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars," has quietly requested a trade and understands he could be on the move if the team can make the right deal. There are four players of particular interest to the Dolphins, according to the Sun-Sentinel: Florida defensive end Derrick Harvey, Auburn defensive end Quentin Groves, Michigan quarterback Chad Henne and Delaware quarterback Joe Flacco. The speculation about Taylor's future has continued despite Bill Parcells' denials that the team has any interest in dealing the 11-year veteran and team captain. ''The only way Jason Taylor doesn't play for the Dolphins in 2008 is if he retires,'' Parcells said March 3. "The team is not going to trade him.'' The Kansas City Chiefs were able to obtain a first-round draft pick and two third-round picks from the Minnesota Vikings for defensive end Jared Allen. But an NFL source told the Sun-Sentinel that Taylor doesn't merit the same trade value as Allen, due to his age and the money remaining on his contract. Allen, whose new contract with the Vikings guaranteed him $31 million, is 26 and led the NFL with 15½ sacks last season. Taylor hasn't missed a game since 2000 and is a six-time Pro Bowl pick, but he is 33 and has two years and $17 million remaining on his deal. Must be the new trend to dump your Defensive man for picks.

I don't see any team match the price the Dolphins are asking for.
Don't get me wrong, Taylor can still bring it. But for how long? He is 34 and may only have 2 more solid years left. Teams would rather take their first round pick and draft a DE. Also, this is a tough draft for the Dolphins to be shopping Taylor around. There is a good amount of talent at the DE position in this years draft. IMO, the Dolphins get a 3rd rounder for him at best. And thats coming from a contending team that needs an instant fix.

I think if he gets on the right team he could help get them farther into the playoffs. They should try the Titans then, That would give the Titans studs at LE,DT,RE

lol yea. But seriously I think its another mistake that Parcells is doing in his so called "Cleaning House Plan". Taylor is a great DE he was pretty much the heart and soul of that Fins D.

I think the Jags would rather work with the two DE's they drafted, rather than trade for an aging Taylor. If the price tag on Taylor goes on sale, the I can see the Jags making a run for him.

The Jaguars traded their first round pick, two thirds and a fourth just to move up 18 slots to take Derrick Harvey. Call me crazy, but I'm guessing they could have offered those two thirds and a fourth (or less) to the Dolphins for Taylor and still gotten a great player at #26.
Then again, I have no faith in defensive ends drafted from anywhere in the state of Florida (*cough* Jamal Reynolds *cough*). ![]() |
